november - december 2005

happy new year! sorry for the delay in web updates. here is all the andrew news for the last few months, plus everything that is happening for the new year:

the fourth andrew album, to be titled from me to you, is now well on the way. at the end of october, andrew taped the song no one else and at the end of december three more songs were recorded: something warm, july to january and a song tentatively titled forget. that means that nine songs are now on tape for the album which andrew says is "quiet with acoustic guitar and piano - no drums."

available in advance of the new album will be a compilation called "33" from spain's hanky panky records. this 20 song collection will feature at least six exclusive tracks, including two new songs - sad & lonely life and i don't need it anymore - two unissued covers - greener day and a live version of that's not me - as well as two new remixes of dream about you and happy to be here. artwork and release dates should be in our next update!

andrew's monkees book, the monkess: the day-by-day story of the 60s tv pop sensation, has gone into a second printing and was mentioned recently by xtc's andy partridge in the uk magazine word, The Word. the book was also singled out for praise as one of the best music books of 2005 by the london times: "For eye-popping, mind-melting detail and an incredible story, Andrew Sandovalís The Monkees (Backbeat £16.95; offer £15.26) is the pick of the bunch."

the box set andrew produced on the band, the band: a musical history, was named reissue of the year by mojo. look for a review of andrew's everly brothers bear family book/bookset in the next issue of uncut.

october 2005

andrew was in the studio off and on last month. the fully restored director's cut version of dream about you was completed at capitol records. andrew finished greener days at ofr with some chamberlin and i don't need it anymore (an outtake from the man who would be king sessions) had some piano overdubbed. the best of andrew cd (for spanish release) will be completed this month, featuring at least five unissued tracks and a big booklet of liner notes and lyrics (in english and spanish). the fourth andrew album of all-new material is also progressing with two new songs nearly ready for the studio, and more work planned for the five already taped.

the latest issue of rolling stone gave the band's box set, a musical history, which andrew produced, a five-star review. robbie robertson of the band has mentioned andrew's musical detective work in some recent interviews and andrew turned up at the borders in-store that launched this four-years-in-the-making-project last week. Click here for a photo of andrew with robbie robertson.

also, the german rolling stone's review of andrew's monkees book, the monkess: the day-by-day story of the 60s tv pop sensation (currently rated 4.5 stars out of 5 at amazon) is here. A translated version of another interview with andrew regarding the book is here.

september 2005

andrew has been back in the studio throughout august with brian kehew, arranger roger neill and a host of others working on a variety of tracks. among them were a full orchestral version of i want to go for andrew's fourth album, an outtake from a beautiful story called sad & lonely life, and an updated remix of andrew's first single dream about you. work on these tracks for an upcoming "best of" collection and andrew's next all-new album continues through this month.

you can read two recent interviews with andrew about his monkees book at ear candy and stevehoffman.com. reviews continue to pour in, such as the most recent issue of ugly things and greenmanreview.com

andrew reached also reached a milestone when his book became the billionth entry into the worldcat, the world's richest online resource for finding library materials. neither the cataloger nor andrew won any money, but we think they are proud watch worldcat grow.

august 2005

andrew has been back in the studio working on his upcoming compilation for release in spain. just completed are versions of david gates' greener days (and outtake from the man who would be king sessions) and brian wilson's that's not me (recorded live at the el rey theater pet sounds tribute in 1996.

further andrew recording sessions will take place throughout august, perhaps even some work on andrew's fourth album.

july 2005 (updated july 19)

we hope you enjoy these pictures from tower records, sherman oaks, signing with peter tork on july 9, 2005. peter performed for a full hour for a gaggle of monkeenuts, after which andrew and peter signed books for two hours! it was a very big day.

andrew has recently been on numerous radio shows promoting his book on the monkees. below are some of the ones you might have heard (or maybe missed):

july 6th. krth 101.1 fm in los angeles hosted andrew and peter tork for a about a half hour from 8:30am - 9am. peter played two songs, and show host hollywood hamilton grappled with pronouncing andrew's last name.

july 7th. andrew was the guest on ottawa, canada's "late night counsell" (broadcast on am 580) from 10 pm till almost midnight! andrew answered questions and took calls.

july 8th. andrew talked with the hosts of louisiana live. yes, they have a website. they were very impressed by the weight of the book.

july 14. andrew was on vermont's wvmt for about 25 minuntes at 9:10 am, then on sioux falls' "the mcdaniel mess" (ksso radio - 1140 am) @ 7:30 am (pdt) for another 20 minuntes. the day wrapped with a 45- minute stint on wdws' gary o' brien & friends (champagne, il) from 3:15 - 4 pm (cdt).

august 31st on wkct radio's "drive time" at 2:44 pm (pdt).

if you can't tune in for any of these shows, you might want to pick up some recent reviews of andrew's book the monkees. the august issue of mojo gave the book four stars and says the book has "everything - details of recording sessions, daily movements of each monkee, who they partied with, [even] teen mag reports of their illnesses...essential for fans, it's an enmgaging document of one of the '60s most important phenomena."

the august issue of record collector features a quirky excerpt from the book and another four star review: "With an appeal to both fans of the group and lovers of 1960s music, it is a mighty fine book and another great example of how historical rock research should be carried out."

the july 22 issue of goldmine is equally effusive, calling the book "a must for your music reference library, monkees or otherwise."

in some actual andrew music news, there will be a new album this year! well, sort of new. spanish label hanky panky records will issue a limited edition compilation of andrew's best tracks along with five previously unissued songs later this year. andrew we will be back in the studio during july to complete some old recordings. check back soon for more details.

andrew's third album, what's it all about, is the subject of two new reviews:
corin ashley of the big takeover says: "absolutely gorgeous swishes of vintage keyboards, strings, and harpsichord meander through and arrayof classic melodies and rich harmonies. rarely do such impressive production touches find their way to such strong songs."
tim hinely of dagger says: "andrew sandoval has made his third terrific record of leftbanke/beach boys/zombies inspired pop and no one seems to have noticed." make tim eat his words and buy a copy now!

on june 4th, andrew will be signing copies of his book from 2 - 3pm in booth 2760 at book expo america.

andrew's book has already been reviewed in publishers weekly, and they said "Music historian Sandoval obsessively covers concerts, recordings and TV in pursuit of all Monkees trivia.  Beginning with the 1942-1945 births of the quartet members (Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones), Sandoval traces their solo careers until the four were brought together in 1966 for NBC's The Monkees series, followed by hit albums through the late '60s.  With a complete 'Songography,' 135 illustrations, a TV episode guide, lengthy interview quotes and exhaustive research through thousands of press clippings, Sandoval and designer Paul Cooper deliver a strong package." look for another review of the book in the august issue of mojo.

in july andrew will appear with peter tork for a signing in los angeles. details and date to follow.

and finally, on may 17th andrew recorded five new songs for his upcoming album with brian kehew. the songs so far taped are: a change of scene/something for you/the distance/i want to go/a someone new in my life. sessions will continue next month. the album will come out next year. however, an andrew compilation album (with some new material) may be available later this year. we will keep you posted.

april & may 2005

andrew is due to start recording a new album any day now (with a release date of early 2006). so far six songs are arranged and he says the long player will likely have lots of acoustic guitars and strings (what a surprise).

60s tv pop sensation will not likely hit u.s. stores until the beginning of july. copies may be available sooner in the u.k. andrew will be doing one book event on june 2 in the new york city area where books may be available in advance of their general sale. we'll keep you posted on further info.

march 2005

after an extended hiatus, demo of the month is back!

this website is due for an update. don't forget to check back now and then.

february 2005

there are more reviews of what's it all about. check the avebury records news page for a round up.

january 2005

happy new year!

the reviews continue to roll in for what's it all about? among the best is one in the latest issue of uncut (with bob dylan on the cover) which has this to say: "Andrew is Andrew Sandoval, author, noted reissues producer and archivist (with accompanists Velvet Crush drummer Ric Menck and ex-Last bassist David Nolte). Since 1996, he's been cutting criminally unheralded orchestral pop records in the spirit of the Left Banke, Beach Boys, Zombies and Love. What's It All About?, Sandoval's third full-length, is a glisteningly melodic batch of sun-baked gems where jangly guitars collide with harpsichord, mellotron, organ and violins."

some nice ones also popped on the net from nighttimes.com, indiepages.com, mohairsweets, twee.net and vanity project

we can't quite make out this one from germany. maybe you can tell us what it's all about?

last month's andrewversary featured a long and varied set (the golden state/where I want to be/what do you see in me?/high tower/can't be lonely without you/unrequited life/i wish you would/dream about you/friend of mine/man who would king/heading for a fall) in which andrew was joined by musical coconspirators past and present (matt lederman on guitar, dave jenkins on bass, jim laspesa on drums and backing vocals, kristian hoffman on keyboards, steve stanley on backing vocals, carrie bartsch on violin and rebbeca yeh on cello). the evening was capped off by an unexpected, sincere confessional from promoter david bash concerning the song dream about you. you should've been there! a cool review of the show is available on this kinks fan site. photos from the show can be seen here.

work continues on andrew's monkees book (apparently now just called the monkees) as andrew heads into the home stretch (that means '
69 and '70), the publication is still on track for june, with a number of promotional events scheduled to coincide with the release. as always we'll keep you posted as when more details become available.
