december 2004

andrew will make a special appearance on december 11, 2004 at café-club fais do do in los angeles as part of international pop overthrow presents. the performance (which is scheduled for 11pm) commemorates the anniversary of andrew's first live gig (fifteen years ago!). this andrewversary will be a retrospective of his three albums and will feature a cavalcade of the musicians who performed with andrew over the years. admission for this show is eight dollars.

meanwhile, what's it all about is getting loads of great reviews! in the u.k., andy morten writes about the album for shindig! magazine (there's also a brief one from a site called vanity project).

back home in the u.s., dj mark staples gives his review in tone and groove, while ralf burkart enthuses in the online zine daredevil. aiding and abetting gives the album only a brief notice, but they are no less enthusiastic than the others.

The album was also reviewed in japanese by z-wave. can anyone send us a good english translation of this (babelfish doesn't quite tell the story here)? avebury records will send the first person who sends in a translation a free cd from their catalog.

watch for more reviews in next month's news update.

andrew's instore at freakbeat records sounded great with the usual compliment of violin (carrie bartsch) and cello (matt cooker), plus kristian hoffman (who nailed the harpsichord on where i want to be). the setlist was filled with material from the new album and one brand new, heretofore unrecorded song called the distance. can andrew album number four be far behind? the setlist was as follows: we'll dream / or, maybe not / where i want to be / how do you go on? / nevermore / the distance / round going round / another way of life / the golden state. take a look at photos from the show here.

work on andrew's monkees book is nearing completion (andrew is halfway through editing 1969 and deep in the hunt for a few more tidbits on the group's elusive tour that year). a cover has now been selected (though not by andrew), and the epic will ship to u.s. bookstores in june 2005 (it may be available in the u.k. slightly sooner). the u.s. edition will come out via advantage publishers group's thunder bay books imprint and will be distributed by publishers group west. it should be available at all of your favorite retailers. we'll have even more info next month!

november 2004

andrew will be appearing with his large ensemble at freakbeat records on sunday afternoon, november 14. The set will consist almost entirely of material from his new album, what's it all about? see you there!

speaking of which, what's it all about? is available all over the place! in canada it can be ordered from poppolar, in japan from arch records (who has up two song samples and a cool review), as well as apple crumble, in europe from greatest hits, and in the u.s. it can, of course, be ordered directly from avebury records.

the album also made dagger magazine's monthly top 10.

october 2004

andrew's third album, what's it all about?, is now available from avebury records and at your local indie-friendly record store. to coincide with the release, andrew will perform live for the first time since january. already set is a free in-store show at freakbeat records in Sherman Oaks, CA on sunday, november 14, plus an international pop overthrow presents show at café-club fais do-do in Los Angeles on saturday evening, december 11. check back here soon for further dates and more details on these shows! andrew has recently composed some new songs so they may feature in these performances, as well as all the new tracks from what's it all about?, most of which have not been done live).

in honor of the release of brian wilson's long awaited smile album, the demo of the month is if i see you smile.

andrew's work continues on the monkees book (right now he's stuck editing 1968). as of this writing four different covers have been designed for the book, but none has yet been selected by the publisher. andrew says the book will actually begin literally at the birth of the monkees and will follow their lives (and those of their associates bert schneider and bob rafelson) right through 1970 in day-by-day form (covering every recording session, live appearance, film shoot, etc.). it also features full details about session musicians and the group's interaction with such artists as the beatles and jimi hendrix. for those of you who have written in with concern that proper respect is paid to the later years (1969 and 1970), don't worry. the book will contain several unpublished concert dates and recording info for mike nesmith's first three solo albums!

august and september 2004

andrew is preparing for the september 28 official release of his new full-length cd, what's it all about? You can buy a copy right now from avebury records.

july 2004

andrew apologizes for the lack of update last month. again and again he was all set to send us some news, but he's been so wrapped up in his latest project that the time just slipped away from him (several times).

the artwork for andrew's new album what's it all about? is being prepared this month and you'll be able to hold copies in your hands in september! the album will be released by andrew's friends at avebury records. we'll keep you posted on a definite date as soon as the CD is manufactured.

the latest project that andrew has been consumed with is his first ever book. many of you are aware that andrew is involved in the reissue of the monkees catalog and has written extensively about the group. andrew's book, studying the band's career from 1965-1970, will be available in spring 2005. publishing details and a dedicated website will follow in august. the format of the book is of a diary and features all of their recording sessions, filming dates and personal appearances from this period. It will include some previously unpublished interviews with the band members, their producers and songwriters, as well as rare photos and documents.

also, be sure to check out this month's demo of the month.

june 2004

busy book writing. more next month.

may 2004

andrew's new album is fully completed! titled what's it all about?, the final song lineup is as follows: we'll dream/or, maybe not/can't be lonely/where i want to be/how do you go on?/nevermore/round going round/how it goes/another way of life/how come/the golden state. we hope to bring you release information on the album in next month's news.

some of the songs were previewed at andrew's last two live performances, while a few more showed up here as demo of the month material. now we are proud to present the first listen of two completed songs from the what's it all about?, where i want to be and can't be lonely, and a demo version of the golden state.

elsewhere on the site, just about every page has been updated and refurbished. take a look at our new pictures page, or read the recently added about the songs on happily ever after. also, the reviews page now features the last two releases and the lyrics page has all the words to the songs from the forthcoming album.

april 2004

we apologize for the lack of an update last month. andrew was simply too busy traveling and recording to give us the full details.

when not traveling around and enjoying life (or being in bed sick with a cold and not), andrew has been in the studio around the clock completing his new album. eight of the album's eleven songs are now fully recorded and mixed (we'll dream; or, maybe not; can't be lonely without you; nevermore; how come it takes so long - and its over so soon; round going round; how it goes; how do you go on?). working with engineer/producer brian kehew, andrew says these are the most "hi-fi" sounding andrew cuts ever! all that's left now is the contribution of andrew orchestral arranger, roger neill,  who is turning his hand to three songs (where i want to be; another way of life; the golden state). overdubs with string players, et al. are due the first week in april. therefore we hope to have some sound samples of the new andrew album for next month's up date!

andrew's first album, a beautiful story, is due to be reissued and given wide distribution on may 4. in fact, it will actually be available in many stores for the first time ever. although it will not feature any bonus material, it will come with its original deluxe packaging while supplies last. if you've only heard happy to be here, you should definitely pick up a copy of a beautiful story when it becomes available again. we will update the shopping page with details when they are available.

expect more details on andrew's upcoming releases, live shows and some brand new songs in may!

march 2004

busy recording and travelling....

february 2004

andrewsandoval.com has now been in service one full year! in that time, we have had more than 25,000 server requests, with visitors from all over the world. we would love to hear from you about what you'd like to see on the site in the future. also, please join the andrew mailing list for news and site updates.

on january 17, andrew did a surprise (even to himself) opening slot for former db's peter holsapple and chris stamey at mccabe's guitar shop in santa monica. it was andrew's first solo acoustic appearance in los angeles in over five years. the set list was: round going round/what do you see in me?/high tower/it may never happen/another way of life/it only costs a dime. andrew says it was great to meet up again with his old friend peter holsapple and instead of providing a demo for this month, he has sent along an excerpt from the show (up now on the demo of the month page of andrewsandoval.com).

andrew has been in and out of the recording studio all month. david nolte came in to add bass to several of the tracks that he could be present for while working with david gray and a variety of overdubs were also added by andrew to a number of the songs. the album is very close to completion now. two more songs are due to be recorded in the next few weeks, a new song of andrew's called nevermore and a rearrangement of a song cut in december, where i want to be. after that, it is on to dub the strings for a few songs (though the mellotron has taken over for them on many cuts) and final mixing. once the record is mixed, details on its release will be worked out and available on this page.

andrew's last album, happy to be here, received another accolade when it was chosen as one of the best album's of 2003 by the pittsburgh post-gazette. although cat power took the top spot, we think that duke the cat has far more cat power than chan marshall (he's better looking too).

january 2004

happy holidays and a happy to be here new year from andrewsandoval.com

two major reviews of andrew's recent records have just turned up. pop culture press reviews editor luke torn gives his second (still excellent) take on happy to be here in that magazine's latest issue (with the flaming lips on the cover). meanwhile the new issue of the big takeover (#53) features corin ashley's spot on summary of happily ever after.

andrew was back in the studio in december (with ric menck, david nolte and kristian hoffman) recording the songs how it goes, where I want to be and a cover of grapefruit's round going round. a rough home demo of andrew's arrangement for this cover is featured as our demo of the month.

the song it may never happen may just happen to pop up in a few interesting places during 2004. we'll carry the details as soon as they become available.

look for lots of updates to our site in february as we celebrate our first full year of activity.
